Why Cat Kid Comic Club works
Li'l Petey teaches twenty-one baby frogs to make comics, so the book is a frame story wrapped around the frogs' own strips - drawn in crayon, in photo-collage, in stick figures. It is the Dog Man spin-off that turns a reader into a maker: children who finish it reliably go and draw their own, which is not something the main series does.
Before you buy it
Much more of a portfolio than a plot; a child expecting Dog Man's chase structure may find the middle baggy. The frame story leans on arguments about whether art has to be good, which is the most talky Pilkey has ever been.
Themes: comics, making things, frogs, creativity, siblings.

Questions parents ask about Cat Kid Comic Club
- How long does it take to read Cat Kid Comic Club aloud?
- About 44 minutes at an unhurried pace, from a word count of 4,830. Reading it fast shaves perhaps a third off; stopping for questions on every page can double it.
- What age is Cat Kid Comic Club actually for?
- Ages 6-8 in our testing, which is narrower than the publisher's range. With 3 sentences a page and vocabulary at 2 out of 5, it asks for that much attention span and no more.
- Does Cat Kid Comic Club survive being read on repeat?
- Yes. It survives a fortnight of nightly repeats, which is the real test.
