Why it worksJolly Phonics teaches forty-two letter sounds in seven groups, starting s, a, t, i, p, n, and gives each one an action and a song - which is why it is the scheme that works for children who will not sit for a worksheet. Read and See is its reading half: twelve small fold-out books, each built on the sounds taught so far, with a flap that reveals the answer, so decoding produces an immediate payoff.

Worth knowingJolly Phonics teaches sounds in its own order, which is not the Letters and Sounds phase order most English schools now follow. Wonderful as a first introduction at home; check with the school before using it as the main scheme, or your child meets sounds in two different sequences.

Why it worksSeven write-in workbooks, one per Jolly Phonics letter-sound group, in the order the scheme teaches them - so book 1 is s, a, t, i, p, n and by book 7 the child has met all forty-two sounds including the digraphs. Bought as the set it is the cheapest complete phonics course a parent can run at home, and the sequence is decided for you, which is the part most parents get wrong.

Worth knowingThese are workbooks, not stories - there is nothing to read aloud at bedtime and no re-read value once the pages are filled in. Pair them with actual decodable readers or the phonics stays abstract. Bought once, used once.

Why it worksThe cheapest honest starting point before any scheme: forty-eight pages that do one thing, teach the child to say each letter sound correctly - the pure sound, not the letter name and not the sound with an -uh on the end. Getting that wrong at home is the single most common thing parents do that makes school phonics harder, and this is the book that prevents it.

Worth knowingA workbook, so there is nothing here to read for pleasure and no reason to open it twice. It is preparation for decodable readers, not a reader itself.

Why it worksFloppy's Phonics is the synthetic phonics strand of Oxford Reading Tree, written by Debbie Hepplewhite, and Sounds and Letters is its teaching half: each thin book takes a small set of letter-sound correspondences and puts them on a busy illustrated scene the child hunts through, saying the sound every time they find it. It is the book a parent is most likely to find in the book bag and least likely to understand, because it has almost no story in it - that is deliberate, it is sound practice, not a reading book.

Worth knowingSold to schools in packs rather than as single copies, so buying one at home is awkward and expensive per page. If you want Floppy's Phonics at home, the Read with Oxford range is the consumer equivalent; this record exists so you know what came home in the bag.

Why it worksThe one that gets a resistant child to the table. It covers the same Letters and Sounds ground as the scheme workbooks - single letter sounds, then digraphs, then blending - but a child who has flatly refused a Jolly Phonics workbook will sit down for Peppa, and the phonics inside is real rather than decorative.

Worth knowingPractice, not reading. There are no stories to decode here, so it needs pairing with actual decodable readers, and once the pages are filled in it is finished. Ladybird publish several near-identical Peppa phonics titles - check you are not buying the same activities twice.

Why it worksRead Write Inc. is Ruth Miskin's scheme and the other programme you are most likely to meet in an English school. The Sound Blending Books are the earliest rung: a handful of Set 1 sounds, a picture, and a word to push together out loud, which is the single skill that gates everything after it. If your child can say the sounds but cannot yet run them together into a word, this is the level to be at, not a storybook.

Worth knowingRWI's main Storybooks are sold to schools, not to parents - the Book Bag Books are the part of the scheme you can actually buy, and they are supplements to the school's teaching rather than a standalone course. The storybooks then climb a colour ladder (Red, Green, Purple, Pink, Orange, Yellow, Blue, Grey); ask the school which colour your child is on before you buy anything.

Why it worksThe Gruffalo author wrote a whole decodable scheme, and this is its first book. Decodables are usually written by committee and read like it; Donaldson wrote Songbirds under the same constraint - only the sounds taught so far - and still got a joke and an ending into fifty-odd words. If your child loves The Gruffalo and is now bringing home flat little phonics books, this is the one that connects the two.

Worth knowingLevel 1+ means the very first stage of decoding, roughly the first term of Reception. It will feel insultingly easy to a confident reader; go up the Songbirds levels rather than repeating this one.

Why it worksPhonic Books is the small independent publisher that phonics tutors and dyslexia specialists actually recommend, because the code is controlled more tightly than any of the big schemes - Stage 1 uses four letters and nothing else. This bindup collects Stages 1 to 7, covering the single-letter sounds of the alphabet, so a child who is genuinely stuck at the beginning gets a book they can read every word of on day one.

Worth knowingDeliberately plain. There is no plot to speak of at Stage 1 and the illustrations are functional - this is a decoding tool, not a story, and a child who wants a story will say so. Buy alongside a picture book, not instead of one.

Why it worksBug Club Phonics is Pearson's scheme, used widely in English primaries, and this is the rare case of a school programme packaged honestly for home: six decodable stories covering Phonics Sets 1 to 3, plus a parent guide that explains what a set is and an activity book. The parent guide is the actual value - it is the only one of these schemes that assumes you have never been taught phonics yourself.

Worth knowingCovers the very first three sets only, which is a few weeks of Reception. Packs 2 (Sets 4-6) and 3 (Sets 7-9) continue it, and you will want them quickly - budget for the sequence, not the box.

Why it worksBuilt on shared reading: the adult reads the left-hand page, the child reads the right, and only the child's pages are restricted to the sounds taught so far. That means the story can be properly good - rockets, a moon trip, rhyme - while the child's share stays genuinely decodable, which fixes the usual complaint that decodables are boring.

Worth knowingIt is a fifteen-book sequence and works best read in order, because the child's pages introduce sounds cumulatively. It is also phonics-based rather than matched to any school scheme, so treat it as extra practice at home rather than a substitute for the school's books.

Why it worksThe step after the Launchers: same tight code control, but now on vowel spellings - the stage where English stops being one sound per letter and children who were fine suddenly stall. Level 1 takes one vowel sound at a time and gives it a whole story, so ai and ay are practised until they are automatic rather than met once and moved past.

Worth knowingVowel spellings is where most home phonics runs out of road, and this set assumes the single-letter sounds are already secure. Start at the Launchers if there is any doubt; going back is much harder than starting lower.

Why it worksCollins Big Cat is the scheme whose decodables read most like real books, and this strand is matched sound-for-sound to Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, which is now the most widely adopted validated phonics programme in English schools. Phase 5 is the Year 1 stage where alternative spellings of the same sound arrive - ai, ay, a-e - and a story written by an actual children's author makes that grind bearable.

Worth knowingOnly worth buying if your school uses Little Wandle; the phase numbering will not line up otherwise. Collins also band their books by colour (pink, red, yellow, blue, green, orange, turquoise, purple, gold, white, lime, in that order) - the phase and the colour band are two different systems and shops mix them up constantly.

Why it worksThis is the home version of the scheme most English primary schools actually send books home in - Oxford Reading Tree, the Biff, Chip and Kipper strand. One hardback holds several short stories, half of them fully decodable phonics books and half First Stories, so a child practises sounding out and then gets a story that pays off the effort. Buying the level the school is on means the words in the book are ones they have already been taught.

Worth knowingThe collections run Level 1 to Level 6 and the covers look nearly identical - check the level printed on the spine before buying, because Level 4 in front of a Level 1 reader is the fastest way to convince a child they cannot read. Ask the school which ORT stage your child is on; the levels map to it directly.

Why it worksThe later volume in the same hardback range, at 92 pages, and the point where the magic key stories start carrying real plot rather than a sentence a page. A child who has stopped needing to sound out every word gets something long enough to feel like a book, still written to a controlled phonics code so they are not ambushed by a word they have no strategy for.

Worth knowingMuch longer than it looks. Read one story per sitting - a child who has just started decoding will run out of stamina about a third of the way in, and finishing the whole book in one go is nobody's goal.

Why it worksThe set, not a book - thirty-six Songbirds titles spanning Read with Oxford Stages 1 to 4, which is roughly Reception through the end of Year 1. Buying the box solves the real problem with decodables at home, which is that a child burns through a single one in ninety seconds and then has nothing at the right level to move to. Because it is Donaldson throughout, the stories stay readable for the adult sitting alongside.

Worth knowingThis is a bundled collection rather than a single publisher edition, so the exact contents and packaging vary between sellers; check the stage range in the listing. Thirty-six thin books also need somewhere to live - they are not a shelf-friendly format.

Why it worksA set of decodable adventure books written for older children who are still decoding - the one gap every other scheme leaves. The code is as controlled as a Reception reader but the story is a fantasy quest with peril in it, so a seven- or eight-year-old is not handed a book about a cat on a mat and asked to feel good about it.

Worth knowingAimed at struggling and catch-up readers, so a fluent six-year-old will find the sentences oddly clipped. The value here is entirely in the mismatch it fixes; if there is no mismatch, buy a normal chapter book.
