The useful verdict
Why The Adventures of Captain Underpants works
Two boys hypnotise their headteacher into believing he is a superhero who fights in his underwear. The chapters are two to four pages, half of them are comics the boys supposedly drew themselves, and Pilkey stops the prose dead for Flip-O-Rama - so a reluctant six-year-old is never more than a page from something that is not prose.
Before you buy it
ATOS 4.3, noticeably harder text than Dog Man despite looking easier, and it is the one to hand over second not first. The plot rewards George and Harold for pranking, lying and hypnotising an adult, and the toilet humour is relentless rather than occasional. Some schools will not stock it.
Themes: comics, superheroes, school, pranks, silly.

Questions parents ask about The Adventures of Captain Underpants
- How long does it take to read The Adventures of Captain Underpants aloud?
- About 52 minutes at an unhurried pace, from a word count of 5,731. Reading it fast shaves perhaps a third off; stopping for questions on every page can double it.
- What age is The Adventures of Captain Underpants actually for?
- Ages 6-8 in our testing, which is narrower than the publisher's range. With 4 sentences a page and vocabulary at 3 out of 5, it asks for that much attention span and no more.
- Does The Adventures of Captain Underpants survive being read on repeat?
- Yes. It survives a fortnight of nightly repeats, which is the real test.
